Busy is a Choice. Tired is a Mindset.

My little boy has been watching Twitch a lot lately (a social media platform where you watch other people play video games) He’s kind of turning into a little 4.5 year old gamer. My BUILDER sprit took over, and I decided to have an important conversation with him…
I told him that we can have HIM play the games, and have other people watch him on Twitch. He was intrigued…then interested…then Tuesday night he was asking me all night long to “Make a video” for Twitch. I haven’t had the time to set it all up yet, so after I finished with some office work it was about 9pm and I told him we’d just record a video for now instead. We did, and it was hilarious!! (it’s on my social media if you want to see it)
One of my wife’s friends commented on Facebook that the Glassett’s are the busiest people on earth, and she doesn’t understand how we have time to do all the things that we do. I feel that. I get that…and from the outside I understand why she would say that…but…
Busy is a choice!
I love to BUILD and so when I get home, I just keep doing it. Sometimes that looks like being on the phone with you guys. Sometimes it looks like writing. Sometimes it looks like helping Michelle with her marketing. Sometimes it looks like building legos with Boston! Soon It will look like playing Roblox with him… I don’t watch TV. I wake up at the same time everyday (yes, even when I’m off). I read before I go to bed. I write in my journal.
I may look “busy”, but really it’s just only doing things that ADD VALUE to the family or to life. I’m never too busy, but my day is ALWAYS full.
How does this apply to you? Simple…we’re out of BTS now, and the MORAL here is that we don’t let down. We don’t get lazy and say “we’re tired.” HELL. NO. If busy is a choice, then tired is a mindset. We’re fine. Honestly. Clean up the…SELLING, STORE, and OPERATIONS. We’ve got work to do!
Thanks!

Offense Builds. Defense Loses.

We have worked hard. Most of us VERY hard over the last 2-3 weeks. That was so we could WIN and WIN BIG! And that’s exactly what we did :-)
Now, we’re all going to take a little time off next week, and get some “rest”.
But an important thing to note; That rest is done away from Journeys.
What do I mean by that???
While we’re at work, we gotta WORK.
When we clock out for the day, do whatever you want. When we clock IN for the day, WE BUILD.
Build sales Build GOR Build people Build culture
If we’re not building, we’re not playing offense. If we’re not playing offense, we’re playing defense. (THERE IS NO MIDDLE. Only Offense and Defense.) When we play defense, we’re just maintaining. Maintaining is the same as losing because everyone else that’s on offense is gaining ground.
Focus your work on the things that matter. Get the sales behaviors to a place you are PROUD of. I’m going to ASK that you fix that sock ratio NOW.
Let’s keep building!! :-)

For the Love of the Grind (Why I Don’t Set Many Goals)

Good Wednesday Morning!

I had a funny conversation with my best friend last night.

He just got back from a 10 day vacation out in the wilderness at a family cabin up in north Washington (practically Canada), and he was telling me that he thinks that the way society is set up with work and bills etc is something that he disagrees with.

He just wants to go on adventures and not have to work.

There’s not a TON of advice to give here, but I at least tried…

I told him to start filming his “adventures” and putting it on the internet. Others do it and make a living!

He didn’t like that idea either though…lol.

My final advice for him was simple…it’s ALL work. Life I mean.

I have a MUCH different view of the world as he does, so in my opinion, work is where my enjoyment lives!

Not that I wouldn’t love backpacking through the Smokey mountains or 2 weeks in Europe attending as many soccer games as humanly possible, but…

It’s a BUILDING thing for me.

I want to create something that can change a person’s life.
A culture that they feel at home in.
A system that helps them succeed and fulfill dreams.
A company that impacts PEOPLE over and over and over.
A MACHINE that can exponentially raise my abilities to touch even more lives.

That’s why I love what I do.
That’s why I don’t set many “goals”.

I think goals are fine and dandy.
But I also feel passionately that no one grinds hard and makes tough decisions for years at a time so they can buy a new watch!

It’s the LOVE of that process and that grind that keeps me coming back day in day out.

Now for my buddy, what GRIND is he going to love? Who knows…

But look at what you do for a living, and find what you LOVE in there, but don’t just look at the activities (hiring, selling, training, analytics etc

Look at the VALUES.

My value is BUILDING. What’s yours?

Thank you!

Never Let Down

Good Monday Morning!!

You wanna know how to never get sick?
Always be on.

Why?
Because your immune system lets down when you do.

You have a period of intense pressure and preparation, like finals in school, and when you get through to the other side, and you’re tired (physically and/or mentally) so you breathe a sign of relief, you relax, and you let your guard down.

And then you get a cold.

Now I know that it’s conventional wisdom to “never say never” so, how can I say “NEVER get sick” and “ALWAYS be on”?

Because, it’s ALMOST true.

I actually tell myself that I never get sick, and it helps me remember that if I breathe that sigh of relief, then the cold is around the corner!

Talk Big Picture

BTS is finishing up this week. MS today, and all of LA Wednesday.

It’s been a wild ride of early mornings, late nights, and sweaty days in the store….and WE NEED TO FINISH HARD!

And when school starts, we ain’t really done with anything! Yes, we move past this period, but we’re right into the next period, which is RECALIBRATE and REFOCUS.

+SOPs, GOR, Training…etc. Many things need our attention!

Talk Small Picture

This is what it looks like to always be on…

Your day finishes up, and it was a long one. Feet hurt, back hurts… But that front door is NOT the finish line.

There is no finish line!

If you have a significant other, they want time with you.
If you have children, they NEED time with you.
There’s laundry, dishes, etc.

Just go hard until bedtime!

Not only is it really not that hard, but you’ll get everything accomplished and that means you’ll feel WAY better when you go to bed than if you collapse on the couch and binge watch Netflix, ignoring other responsibilities.

You’ll sleep better too!
Stay focused. Finish hard to the end! And then we keep rolling onto what’s next :-)

Double Down (Work, Work, Work)

Good Thursday Morning!

I work a lot.

A lot of days and a lot of hours.

This was something that I was very proud of for a long time, and then there was a year window there where I had wondered if I worked too much and “missed my 20’s”.

Now I actually wish I would’ve worked more.

Yes. MORE.

I realized that I could’ve gone harder.
Been more focused.
More driven.

How many hours did I spend playing Call of Duty??? (Yikes)
How much time/money did I spend on parties?? (Dumb)
And most importantly, HOW MUCH DO I LOVE THIS??? (A ton)

Rest, play, and recovery and MEGA important, and I acknowledge that.

So, maybe I didn’t need to work more days or more hours…just more meaningful days and hours.

Or the same hours on more meaningful things.

I say all this for 2 reasons.

1. This time of year is about DOUBLING DOWN.
Everyone else is getting distracted, and slowing down. Look around and you’ll see it, and when you do, realize that this is your shot to start lapping people!

It’s time to grind man.

2. This is what success looks like; WORK.
It’s about the LOVE for the process, not the desire to have something. There needs to be a big GOAL to chase, but the love is about enjoying the day to day.

Enjoy the work!! :-)

Offense or Defense (The 2 Mindsets)

Good Tuesday Morning!

There are 2 mindsets in life. Just 2…

Offense
or
Defense

Offense is about “scoring points”.

Think about the person being on attack.
It’s acting on an idea, it’s making a move when you see an opportunity, it’s waking up early to grind, it’s staying late to grind, it’s taking action.

There is an ASSERTIVE nature to being on offense. You execute and you ask for apologies when you’re wrong. It’s positivity and action.

Defense is about “blocking points”.

Think about the person being defensive, or having a defense mechanism.
It’s hesitation on an idea. They talk about a move when they see the opportunity. It’s having a reason to sleep in, it’s finding the excuse to leave early, it’s complaining.

There is a PASSIVE nature to being on defense. They tell you why it won’t work or why they can’t do it. It’s negativity and excuses.

Offense is Positive

The people on offense undoubtedly MAKE things happen, and they have a more uplifting attitude about them, a CAN DO attitude, a WILL DO attitude. It sounds like positivity and the conversations enroll others to join them.

My friends, this epiphany of offense and defense is a powerful one, and when playing offense is a core value to you, opportunities really start to open up…over and over and over and over.

If You’re on Defense…

When you find yourself on defense, there are two things that can help immensely;

1. Give thanks – When you think about it, what do we REALLY have to complain about? We work in a great district, in a great region, for a fantastic company, in the country of opportunity, on a fine of a kind planet.

2. Mind sweep – Stress can bring on defense. Get that stuff OFF your mind and on to paper. Let it live in your planner, or your journal, or a note in your phone, and NOT in your brain. Then, look at the list, and get back on offense…ATTACK IT.

Here’s to LESS comfort zone, and MORE offense :-)

Teach. Trust. Outsource. SELL. COACH.

“The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The realist adjusts the sails”

Good Saturday Morning!

This time of year is all about BIG volume and NEW employees. Your “ship” has probably tripled in size!

This leads to many challenges that you don’t face on a regular basis. It calls for leadership on a level that is not required of you on a regular basis, which leads to 3 options…

1. Complain – Easiest option, and not a solution.

2. Hope for better – Easy as long as you can act naive. Not a solution.

3. Add Value to others – Not actually hard at all, but it takes leadership! Total solution.

“Slowing down doesn’t mean accomplishing less; it means cutting out counterproductive distractions and the perception of being rushed.”

Using the 3rd option will obviously cause us to make more money.

It’s about FOCUS. Where is your focus?

On doing everything even though you have triple the teammates? (Overwhelming)

Or doing the MEANINGFUL stuff, while teaching others the small stuff? (Outsourcing)

Teach and trust others to do the small things, so you can slow down with the people and impact their selling which will impact their lives!

Then you can SELL and TEACH :-)
Have a HUGE Saturday!

Stay Humble and Grind

“The people that are going to be successful are going to find advantages in any situation.” -Tim Ferriss
It’s a mindset thing. A positivity thing, and a humbleness thing…but no matter what it’s a “ME” thing. As in, no matter what we’re given in life, we can and will succeed with it.
Last night I saw a video of a kid that took 2 things that are seemingly unrelated, and is now making a name for himself off of it. 1. He works at Walmart – Yes, blue vest and all 2. He can dance. – Like REALLY dance
He’s now got videos going viral, featured on the news, etc etc. I’ll tell you this…that kid was going to be successful no matter what, it was just a matter of time and people would be paying attention to him. All it took was one Drake song/dance to get popular!
We all have our own “situation”, and career-wise they all take place at work. Then we have an area where our performance is weaker than we’d like.
We all have the same tools, we all have the same customers more-or-less, the only difference is where we put the EFFORT.
Is the effort in IMPROVING and CHANGING the approach when something isn’t working? Or is the effort in looking for a reason “we can’t”? Are we working hard AND working on the right things?
You have an advantage over everyone else, but it takes WORK to find it. Meaningful work! Stay positive and keep grinding, you’ll find it. And when you do, your success will have a VIRAL feel to it too :-)
Thank you!

“Tell Me the Story”

Good Wednesday morning!!
Most of you have heard me say, “Tell me the story” plenty of times. It’s my favorite follow up question because usually when a person tells you something, they hit 3 main points and they rush the whole thing. So by asking them to tell you the story, you’re really saying that you want ALL the details.
It works great in interviews. It works great with arguments. It works great in problem solving… And it works great with numbers!
“I’m just using the numbers to tell me the story.”
The last few days/weeks I’ve sent some messages and had some conversations where I say bold statements like, “I don’t really care about numbers.” And it’s true, because I don’t. And you shouldn’t either! The numbers just tell us a story that our eyes might miss The numbers don’t do a single thing though. As in they don’t DO anything. You and your teams DO all the things that the numbers measure.

So what story are all YOUR numbers telling you?
Numbers are ULTRA important, but what we do is NOT about the numbers. It’s about the story the numbers tell, and that story is ALWAYS about the people and their actions (or lack there of)
Pick a number today and make it your WILL POWER to move that thing. Watch, you will too, as long as you stick with it and experiment with it, and ask for advice and help, and then DO the things that are suggested :-)
Thank you!

Care

Good Tuesday Morning!
“My truest love is watching the ‘ahas’ go off in peoples minds.”
There is lots look forward to everyday when we wake up! But as I continue with my obsession of Values vs Tactics, one thing is becoming clearer and clearer…
All the things that I’ve chased over the years are truly important (Winning, SOPs, organized stores, training and binders, inventory etc etc etc…) But when I’ve ever been at the helm of a team that’s REALLY winning big, there’s been a common theme…
My passion is never tied up in the numbers. As a matter of fact, I almost ignore numbers. The passion lies in seeing how the numbers make other people feel.
I’ve always been able to FEEL that, but never been able to figure it out…until now!
It comes from a commitment to service, a desire to provide value, and a LOVE of teaching.
It’s CARE that fuels the whole thing. Care for other people.
It’s that counterintuitive part of life again! The more SELFLESS your actions, the more credit you get, the more followers you’ll have, the more success you enjoy, and accolades and awards will line your walls.
Care turns out to be true VALUE that matters most and cuts through it all :-)
