Be Exceptional or Look for Exceptions?

Good Wednesday Morning!

Last night I asked my 4 year old son to run into my office and grab my pencil for me because we were hanging some things in the baby’s room.

He said, “Dad I don’t want to, that’s not fun.”

I looked at him and said, “Enjoying it isn’t a requirement of doing it Boston. Run grab my pencil please.”

He did, and then he got a thank you and a high five!

“Most people have a desire to look for the exception instead of the desire to be exceptional.”

The exception is the easy way out. We’re all smart, and we can easily find (or create) an exception if we look.
“I’ve just been busy”
“I’m trying, they’re just not buying”
“It’s been slow”
“It doesn’t work in MY store”
“My customers are different here”

BUT…

When we DO the things that we’re supposed to do, and quit looking for that easy way out (the excuse) we will win more!

Strong leaders don’t ask me to do things that don’t work.
Most companies doesn’t tell you do to things that cause you to lose.
I don’t teach you things that are made up.

All the tactics work. All the behaviors work. All the wisdom is true.

It’s when you drop your STUBBORNNESS or SKEPTICISM and allow yourself to evolve that we make movement.
That movement is GROWTH and it’s right in front of us when we place the value on being exceptional, instead of looking for exceptions.

Thank you!

Get the Results You Want!

Good Tuesday Morning!

“If you’re not getting the results you want, change what you’re doing.” –Adam Robinson

You’d think that would be obvious.
You would think people would pivot, or they would change, but they don’t.
They do more of the same.
They double down on what they’ve already done.
They try harder.

Or…

They look for reasons as to why the results aren’t what they want.
They try to justify so they can keep doing more of the same.
They make excuses :-(

Either way….

They keep doing the same thing expecting different results.

Ok, so how do you change what you’re doing?
A great starting point is to take a moment to call someone for outside perspective. As they look at the issue, since they are not attached to it, they can help you see the solution easier.
Then you have to listen, and try something different!

Or….

Try doing the opposite of what you have been doing.
Go the other way completely!
If you’ve been interviewing a few people, start interviewing a ton!
If you’ve been working 45 hours a week, start working 60.
If you’ve been working 60 hours a week, try working 45
Of course this new direction might not work either. And In that case change again, and again, AND AGAIN.
Embrace change and learn to love being uncomfortable :-)

Thanks,
-NG

P.S. I write about things I struggle with, or have struggled through, not things I’ve mastered or things I’m immune to.

Leaders Don’t Motivate, They Inspire (and the difference between the 2)

A long time ago I had a conversation with a District Manager about motivating people. They had this big explanation as to why it was SO important.
At the end of the explanation, I aggressively disagreed…
I don’t motivate. I don’t teach others how to motivate. It’s not our job, and it’s not an effective form of leadership.
Let me explain…
I believe it is our job to FIND motivated people. Self-motivated. Driven. Ambitious.
See, motivation, to me, is an internal trait. You gotta bring it to me so I can help you do something with it.
When it’s missing, then we have to motivate people to do their job…in short, we have the wrong people.
I came up with an analogy to explain my argument:
I’d rather inspire my Varsity Team to win championships than motivate my JV Team to try harder.

Ahhhhhh, now inspiration…THAT’S the business we’re in!
We inspire Action. Change. Growth.
Our conversations should make people want to go do the things they struggle with.
Maybe we add clarity…and then they see it.
Maybe we add urgency…and they go do it.
Maybe we show them we care, so they know we’re her to catch them if they fall.
Maybe we teach them an easier way, so they can overcome it.
Let me explain the difference in these 2 real quick:
Motivating = Talking people into trying harder. They don’t WANT IT, and you try convince them they do. You want it for them more than they want it for themselves.
Inspiring = Challenging people to see more. They WANT IT, (bad!) and are on the right track, but on the wrong train. You help them find the right train.
If you want motivated people, you have to find them, not motivate them.

Bring the Energy (The Law of Attraction)

Good Friday Morning!

It’s on us to BRING THE ENERGY. The customers feed off it. The employees feed off it. The winning feeds off it.

I used to hear this when I worked own retail…”Nick, it’s so much busier when you’re here!”

You’re right! The store attracts more customers because the ENERGY is up.

Its the LAW OF ATTRACTION at work.

I’m not special. I PROMISE YOU I’M NOT. I was only selling from 10am to 12pm. The girls did all the rest of the winning. I just brought the energy, and it changed how “work” felt for everyone. It changed how the store felt to the customers.

That energy that YOU bring creates an atmosphere that makes customers want to talk to us. Makes employees want to win more. Makes the assistant want to stay late to hit their goal, and makes associates want to check their stats 5 times a shift.

Don’t over complicate it.

So how do you bring the energy???? It’s actually my new email signature…

HAVE FUN. BE YOURSELF. HUSTLE.

Bring it this weekend!
